On 3-5 October 2014 the largest academic event of Belarus – the Fourth International Congress of Belarusian Studies– will take place in Kaunas, Lithuania.
More than 450 scholars from 20 countries will meet at Vytautas Magnus University to discuss the results of their research work done during the year. Traditionally, not only Belarus, but also the entire region of Central and Eastern Europe will be in focus. The Congress will consider a variety of issues from economics, politics and international relations to history, linguistics and culture.
At the plenary session (3 October, 10.00-13.00), famous intellectuals Mykola Ryabchuk (Ukraine) and Ihar Babkoŭ (Belarus) will discuss the main intellectual and social challenges, which the countries of the region currently face (especially in the context of the crisis in Ukraine).The plenary session will be in simultaneously translated.
The sections will particularly consider the implications of the Ukrainian crisis for Belarus and the region (3 October, 15.00-16.00), China’s policy towards the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (4 October, 15.00-16.00), the problems of local politics in Central and Eastern Europe (3 October, 15.00-19.00) and many others. The first two discussions will be simultaneously translated into Russian and English.
The humanitarian unit will consider the problems of the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the history of Belarus of the 19th and 20th centuries, modern Belarusian literature and culture, gender studies, and so on. The Congress program can be found here:

In addition, the Congress will host presentations of books, research and educational projects (4 October, 17.00-19.00), as well as Congress Award for the Best Academic Publication in 2012-2013. The Award will be granted in three nominations: history, social and political sciences, humanities. More than 30 experts were involved in evaluation of the nominated works. The Congress will start its work on 3 October at 10.00 (Friday) and end on 5 October at 14.00 (Sunday).
